I have written in my blog before how much I enjoy walking. Another type of exercise that I do regularly and enjoy is swimming. When I do these activities, I find that I am able to clear my head of mundane day to day things, and think about the things that really are important to me. As I walk, I experience a feeling of joy and peace. I get these feelings to a greater extent while exercising (and after exercise) than I do at other times.
Another blog that I read regularly is called Ripples. The author, David St. Lawrence writes about life in a post-corporate world. David wrote a book called “Danger Quicksand Have a Nice Day”. Anyway, in David’s latest blog post he relates how regular exercise can help you maintain your health and lift your spirits while trying to find work:
One last suggestion, which I discuss in more detail in my book, is that you should make sure you get daily exercise and enough sleep so that you stay as healthy as possible. If you find that you cannot lift your spirits enough to do an effective job of finding work, you might consider getting career counseling of some sort. You may find that career counseling is all that you need to get you moving again. If it doesn’t, then you might want to explore counseling which puts you more at cause over your life.
What David says is true. Exercise makes you feel better, lifts your spirits and helps you become more efficient in everything you do. I find that I get more done in my work if I take an hour of time to exercise, because it helps me focus my mind, and also makes me more active. The increase in activity is something that carries forward through the day.
I saw a story on TV a while back regarding endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals released by your body during exercise. The release of those endorphins into your body bring you joy and have other positive effects on you as well. One thing that I find particular interesting is that endorphins have been found to regulate pain, and they also regulate hunger! So, if you are feeling hungry, go for a walk, jog, swim, whatever…. Just do something!
