Hi James - I understand what you are talking about! That's what has me worried too!

Merry Christmas! BTW, where are you from? Do you mainly speak Tagalog or Bisaya, or what? I ask, because I can speak Bisaya, but not Tagalog at all.

Oh no, mentioning that idea would create 2 factions of 1 against 3. Although the idea seem worthy of exploration, I'm certain the 2 kids and their mom would be one strong faction against it. Even the idea of giving the gift on the 26th would be breaking taboo.

Hi Severa - Nice to hear from you! I hope it works out well for you. For me, I don't see any reason not to do this. Merry Christmas to you and to Ralph.

Hi Luanne - When I wrote this article, I had you in mind! I knew you would comment on this one.

I agree that traditions do die hard, and even change hard. No doubt about it at all. I talked to Feyma about this, and she liked the idea. I am a bit fearful to mention it to the kids, though!

Yes, Christmas is a commercial holiday, one of the the most successful 'Hallmark' holidays of the year! Traditions die hard, especially traditions that involve a lot of good food and people getting and giving gifts, so making a change would probably be hard, even within an extended family.

One of my granddaughters wrote and asked about Filipino Christmas celebrations, and one question was about the difference between the activities of Christians and non-Christians. Here is what I wrote:

"As in the United States, non-Christian families enjoy the festivities of the Christmas season without understanding that God came to earth in the form of a child. Even many religious Filipinos go through the motions of celebrating Christ's birth without understanding it or feeling any awe or gratitude toward God for sending a savior, or for the miracle of His birth. What an amazing thing it is that God became a man so that He could take upon Himself the punishement for sin that we deserved! It is this free gift that we can celebrate with joy and humility!"
