My Experience Was Pretty Easy

Passport-with-visa-150x150

Today we got a comment from Gary.  Gary wrote in about his experiences in getting a 13(a) Resident Visa to live in the Philippines. This is what Gary had to say: My experience was pretty easy, took a bit of time only because I lived in Dallas and the Philippines Consulate is in Los Angeles. The biggest expense was the medical stuff. We didn’t need anything from the Philippines, Rose already had her docs. Dallas Sheriff’s dept provided my clearance, I think it was around $10, I called around to different agencies. I downloaded the application, provided the necessary docs, medical, fees, etc. and FedEx’d to LA. They called me in a few … [Read more...]

Wow, it’s deja vu all over again!

Looking-Good

Just a couple of days ago, I had an article entitled “It’s Coming!  I can’t wait!”  Now, today, I wanted to use the exact same title for this article, but I refrained! What’s coming this time?  Well, I’ll get to that in a minute. About 6 months to a year ago, somebody started preparing an empty parcel of land for building.  Feyma and I wondered what was going to be built there.  The place is not far from our house, five minutes walking distance.  No signs or anything were put up, nothing to indicate what was coming.  The land is right next to a barber shop where I used to have my hair cut regularly, … [Read more...]

Cable-Internet-600x275

Over most of the years that I’ve lived in Davao City, SkyCable, the local Cable TV company has offered Cable Internet service.  Problem is, their service area has always been very limited.  For many years, only one or two relatively small neighborhoods had access to Cable Internet.  I have always wanted the service, but never lived in an area where it was available. During those years, I would usually call SkyCable 3 or 4 times per year to inquire if the service was available in the neighborhood where I lived.  I already knew that it was not available, but I wanted them to realize that there was demand for my neighborhood, and … [Read more...]

If I’m a Dual Citizen, Can I Leave the Country Without Any Problems?

studies-150x150

We got a question from Airhee today, Here’s what Airhee had to say: Hi Bob, I saw that you were helping all these people out with their questions and I was hoping you could help me with mine as well. I came here to the Philippines around Jan 2010 because I wanted to start my studies here (I’m a U.S. citizen). Around March 2010 I applied for the R.A. 9225 to make enrolling easier. I went through the whole process and oath taking, and I have my certificate and everything, so that technically makes me a dual citizen now right? Now my real question is, the studies here didn’t go so well, and I would like to go back to the U.S. soon… … [Read more...]

Can You Obtain Travel Visas for U.S. Citizens at Philippine Embassies in Countries?

travel-visa-150x150

Today we got a comment and question from David. This is what David had to say: Out of curiosity can you obtain travel visas for U.S. citizens at Philippine embassies in countries other than the U.S.? What I mean is: get a 1 year travel visa. At the end of the year pop over to Hong Kong and get a new one. It would be cheaper than extending visas.   Travel Visa   This is John’s reply: David: In most countries, in order to get a visa issued, you need to be resident. Because of document forgeries, etc. they usually won’t issue visas otherwise: Even visit or travel visas. There are exceptions (China from HKG, Myanmar from BKK), … [Read more...]

Walking is good in more ways than one

Walking-is-good-150x150

Getting exercise is important for our bodies.  Walking is an excellent way of getting that exercise. I usually go out and get in some walking time about 4 or 5 days per week.  Walking is something that I truly enjoy doing. Not only is walking easy to do, but there are so many benefits that come from walking.  If you have issues like arthritis or other types of health issues, the nice thing about walking is that it is relatively low impact, and most anybody can do it.  You don’t have to be a big “workout” person or really strain yourself.  Depending on your level of health, you can do a higher impact exercise by … [Read more...]

Visiting the Philippines

DavaoPhilippines-150x150

Today we got a comment and question from Kurt. This is what Kurt had to say: Last year was my 10th visit to the Philippines since 2001. I married my wife on my second visit in 2002. She is now a dual citizen. I retired last year and our plan was to find a place in the Davao area and live there at least half the year returning to the states every 5 or 6 months for a couple of months so I could see my kids. I also liked the idea of being so close to many other countries worth visiting and especially the reasonable airfares to get me there and back. Figuring a 13A was the best route , I started making inquiries. There are several Ex-pat … [Read more...]

The other day, I got an e-mail from a self described “keen follower” of this site, his name is Paul. Paul had a question regarding the costs of living in the Philippines. Of course, cost is an important consideration for those planning to live here, unless they have a large budget.  But, for most potential residents of the Philippines, cost is something that they have to consider and take into account when they make their decisions on where to live, lifestyle and other such matters. Paul has a question Let’s see what Paul had to say: Hi Bob, I am a foreigner living in Japan, and a keen follower of your Web Magazine. I am … [Read more...]

Do we have to File for Extension Every 2 Months?

marriage_certificate-150x150

We got a question from Nell today, Her’s what Nell had to say: Btw Bob, it seems that applying for 13(a) Resident Visa will take us a long time. Like for example the waiting time for our marriage certificate will take 8 months process before we can able to get the authenticated copy from NSO. My fiancee will be staying here for good. What’s the best thing to do while we’re waiting for all the documents? Does it mean we need to file for an extension for every 2 months? We would gladly appreciate everything that you can share to us based on your own personal experience… Thank you in advance Bob… Here’s what Bob had to … [Read more...]
