I’ve talked a little about insurance in the past on this site, but mostly those articles have been related to health insurance, and medical issues. The other day, somebody left a comment here on LiP asking about insurance, but instead of health insurance, he was asking about other types of insurance. He specifically mentioned flood insurance, basic contents insurance and such.

I have had some personal experiences with insurance here, and I thought that this would probably be a good time to share my experiences along these lines.

The person who asked about such insurance is PaulB. Paul left the following comment on my recent article about Warranties in the Philippines. Paul wrote:

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the information.
My request is a little along the path from warranty…. Can and does Insurance operate in the Philipinnes! I want to get basic contents, flood insurance for the house we have just built. Any ideas how I go about this,? Who would do you recommend in Davao? If I did get it, would it pay up if required? I think the answer is ” Are you kidding!” but I thought its worth a comment…..

I offered this reply to Paul:

Hi PaulB – I am going to do something on this comment that I have never done before… I am going to specifically NOT answer your question. The reason is because what you are asking is too complicated to put in a comment. I need to write an article about this, and I will do that soon. So, tune in again, and I will write an article in the next 2 weeks answering your question about insurance, and my experience with insurance in the Philippines.

What is Insurance like in the Philippines?

The reason that I did not answer Paul’s query in the comments was several fold:

Not all readers of the site read all of the comments, especially on an article that is a few days old already. Since this is an important topic, I wanted to give the topic a little more proper venue than in a comment, a place where everybody interested would see that the information is available.

The topic is a little complicated, and perhaps too long-winded for just a comment, and actually deserves fuller coverage in the way of an article.

I felt that the topic of Insurance was quite different from the topic of the previous article – Warranties, so I decided to make it a new article altogether.

As I said earlier in this article, I have indeed had experience with insurance here in the Philippines. When living in the West, in the USA for me, it is the common practice to have insurance on practically everything you own. It is just part of our western culture to carry such insurance. Here in the Philippines, most people do not carry insurance on many of the things that a westerner would normally insure.

Car insurance is mandated by law here, however, the amount of insurance that you must carry is very small. In the past, I carried full insurance on my vehicle. However, as my car is now over 10 years old, I no longer carry such full coverage insurance. I go with the minimal insurance that is required when you register your vehicle. I personally would recommend getting full coverage if your vehicle is relatively new, perhaps newer than 5 or 6 years old.

What types of insurance do you have?

As a renter, we do not need to worry about homeowner’s insurance, that is the responsibility of the house owner. So, this is not something that I concern myself with at all. If you are renting your place of residence, though, the thing you need to think about insuring is your household belongings. This would include anything in your house – furniture, appliances, whatever is under your roof. Homeowner’s insurance is readily available here, as is insurance on the contents of your dwelling place.

Other types of insurance are also readily available. I am sorry, but I do now know about flood insurance, though.

Now, let me relate my experience with insurance, and you can decide what kinds of coverage you should have, based on my experience.

In 2000, we moved to General Santos City. One thing we found there was that we experienced earthquakes on a fairly regular basis. We had contents insurance on our goods, but that insurance did not cover earthquake damage. If you wanted earthquakes to be covered, you needed to buy a separate rider for your insurance policy to cover any damages from earthquakes. Upon consideration, Feyma and I decided that it would be a good idea to purchase an earthquake rider for our policy, so we inquired with an insurance agent that we knew. I do not recall the price of the earthquake coverage, nor does Feyma, but I have it in my mind that it cost us about P15,000 in 2000, which at that time was roughly $375.

On New Years morning, 2002, at about 5am, we were shaken from our sleep by a 7.2 Magnitude quake in General Santos City. It was a real shaker! I have experienced many earthquakes in my life (I’ve lived in California and other earthquake prone areas), but never one of this size. I honestly thought at the time that we may die in the quake! As it turned out, thankfully, we all lived through the quake, but there was substantial damage to much of our belongings in the house. Things like bookshelves, cabinets and such were almost all shaken to the point that they fell over. Dishes fell from the cupboards. Many things were broken.

After everything calmed down, the cleanup effort began. Mostly it was a matter of picking things up, putting them back in place and such. I told Feyma to contact the insurance agent so that we could find out what to do in relation to our insurance coverage. The agent told Feyma to gather any broken items into one place so that they could be inspected and a claim made. So, this is what we did. The agent was supposed to come and visit our house to check on the damage.

Notice I said “supposed to”. Well, she never came. We went to the office and some papers were filled out, but that was the end of it. Nothing was ever paid to us. No further contact came from anybody in the insurance company, except for frequent inquiries from us, but nothing in return.

This experience turned my mind around about insurance in the Philippines. I cannot say for sure that this experience is common, or normal, but what I know is that it was my first and only experience with insurance in the Philippines. After this, we have pretty much gone with only very minimal insurance at all, and mostly no insurance at all. Things that must be insured, like the car, have the minimal insurance required. Other than those minimal policies, I consider myself to be self-insured. If something is broken or destroyed, we just replace it ourselves. Is there risk in this? Sure there is, but life has risk.

So, PaulB, this is my experience with Insurance in the Philippines. Your experiences may vary from this, and I wish you the best of luck in this type of thing.

When buying a major item like a car, a new PC or an appliance, most of us always consider what kind of warranty is being offered. The longer the warranty, the more likely we are to consider buying the item if it meets our needs.

In my time living in the Philippines, more than a decade already, I can recall dealing with warranty issues three different times.

My first warranty experience in the Philippines involved the warranty on my automobile, a 2000 Mitsubishi Adventure AUV (Asian Utility Vehicle). Anytime you purchase an new automobile, invariably there will be things that need adjustments, or parts that may fail within the warranty period. When I had such issues, which were actually very few, I always received excellent service from the Mitsubishi Dealer in General Santos City, where I purchased the vehicle. In terms of the quality of service, and the treatment we received, it was at least as good as a car dealer in the States would have given us, and we were always very happy.

My second experience in dealing with a warranty issue was not as good, though. In 2002, I purchased a CD Writer for my computer. I bought a high end one, one of the higher priced units being offered at Columbia Computer Center in Davao City. I used the CD Writer for only a month, and it quit working. I removed the unit from my computer and brought it to Columbia Computer Center for service. The unit had a 1 year warranty, and it was a major brand, although I do not recall the brand name any longer. Columbia Computer Center sent the unit to a service facility in Manila. Although I kept calling and visiting the store to check on the status of my unit, it took 11 months before I got it back. When I tool it home and hooked it up, the CD Writer still did not work. So, let’s see, I used it for one month, and it was in the service facility for 11 months, so the 12 month warranty had already expired. I went back to the store and explained that the unit still did not work after warranty service, and they basically told me – “too bad.” So, basically the warranty was useless, even though this was a high end major brand name product. At that time, about 8 years ago, a CD Writer was not cheap either, although they sure are today. I had no choice but to throw it away.

My new Samsung Monitor

Back in February, I bought a new PC, and also a new 22″ Samsung Monitor. I loved both the PC and the Monitor. Without a doubt this was the nicest Monitor that I had ever had for a PC. I use my PC extensively, it is my business, and also my lifeline to the outside world, so owning a high quality monitor was something that I thought would be worthwhile for me. I had a bit of a hassle buying the monitor, but I considered it all worthwhile, because when I finally was able to purchase it, I really loved it, and felt that the quality was very high.

Back in mid-July, though, I came into my office to check my e-mail, and the Samsung monitor did not work! I tried all kinds of things to check it, but could not get it to function. I even hooked it up to a different PC in case the video on my PC had quit working. All of this, though, was still not able to get the monitor working. The next morning, we contacted the store where I purchased the monitor, and they advised us that since the monitor was 6 months old, it was still within the warranty period, which was 1 year. They advised us to take it to the Samsung Warranty Center, and told us the address where we could find the Samsung Center. We took the monitor to them on July 24. They told us that since it was a warranty issue, they would work on the monitor right away for us. We called 5 days later, and they said that they were waiting for a new main circuit board from Manila. We called again in about 5 more days and they told us that the monitor was fixed and ready for pickup. I was very happy.

Warranty Issues in the Philippines

When I sent my niece to pick it up, though, they told her that the monitor still did not work. They said that they were in error when they told us that it was ready for pickup. They advised us that if the monitor could not be fixed within one more week, they would give me a new monitor. By the end of that additional week, they were still unable to fix the monitor. So, at that time, we asked where we should go to get the replacement monitor, but they told us that before they could give us a new one, they had to “get approval from Manila.” Hmm? They said nothing about that earlier. They told us that it would take up to a maximum of two weeks to get the approval required, but no longer.

Over the weekend, as two weeks had already passed, Feyma called to inquire about the replacement monitor. Remember, by this time, they had my monitor for one month already. They advised Feyma that they still had not heard from Manila, and it would not take much longer because all that was required was an e-mail from the Manila Samsung Philippines Headquarters. Well, an e-mail only takes seconds to transmit, and they already had been waiting for two weeks! Why should more time be needed?

Over the weekend, I filed a complaint via e-mail with the Samsung Headquarters in Manila, and I also posted a message on Samsung’s Worldwide Facebook page, explaining the situation. So far, no word from Samsung, though.

At this point, I am starting to think that my warranty experience with Samsung is going to be the same as what I experienced with that CD Writer years ago – they will keep dragging it out and end up giving me back a broken unit with the warranty expired. Is this the way that manufacturers deal with warranty issues in the Philippines? Samsung is a major worldwide company and they should take care of their customers, but at this point, it appears to me that they don’t care about their customers.

We shall see what happens as time goes on. At this point, however, I am left unimpressed with how manufacturers handle warranty situations in the Philippines.

Update: Apparently, somebody at Samsung Philippines reads LiP. I got a phone call from Samsung in Manila today. They mentioned this article, apologized to me for the problem, and told me that the new monitor was approved for me earlier today. They told me that they only have to work out the logistics of getting the monitor to me. We shall see what happens!

We all want to be smart, right? We also all want to engage in good habits. Today, I want to tell you about one habit that you can get into that will help make you smarter! Well, at least it will help you gain more information, and be better informed. It will also make you appear smarter to people.

What am I talking about?

Listening.

That’s right, listening. Nobody ever gained any knowledge while talking. We can gain knowledge if we listen, though! Not all information that we listen to will make us better informed, but it is our brains that can weigh the information and decide if the information is useful or not. If we do not listen, we won’t have a chance to even evaluate the information that others are trying to tell us.

Listening, but is the message getting through?

If you are having a conversation with another person, the only way to gain more information is by closing your mouth, stopping your talking, and instead by listening to what the other person is saying. When you listen, you are gaining additional information. After you listen to that information and process it, your mind may tell you that the information is of no value, is incorrect or somehow is not useful. When your mind gives you this information after analyzing the information that you heard, then you can decide whether to retain the information, or to simply dispose of it.

Always try to listen, you will be rewarded!

However, if you don’t listen in the first place, you will garner no additional information.

If you listen to a person and he tells you information that is false, or in some way flawed, it is good to even get that kind of information. Why would it be good to get false or flawed information? Because it helps you decide if you should continue to rely on that person for advice or further information. If a certain person consistently provides you with faulty information, it is a good indicator that it is not worth your time to listen to that person any longer. In fact, not only can you stop listening, but you are wasting your time to even engage in conversation with that person, because you cannot rely on what they tell you in future conversations either.

By listening, not only are you gaining a chance to receive additional information, but you are showing other people that you are smart. Others, when they have a chance to talk to you and be heard, will come to value you more, because they will realize that you are there to actually hear what they say. If they are giving your valuable and accurate information in your exchange, you will act on that information, and they will see that they are wisely spending their time with you. By showing them this, they will come to value you, and feel that they are as valuable to you as you are to them. It’s a give and take relationship where each of you can benefit the other.

Try hard to engage your ears before your mouth. That is what a smart person does, and you want to be smart, right?

In all parts of our lives we need to focus on something. If we don’t focus ourselves, our lives will be aimless, going on from one thing to another without any real effort to be the best we can be at any one thing.

Being the best that you can be is important for many reasons. For one thing, it will make you feel really good, and thus even make it possible to improve on your best. But, probably the most important thing when it comes to focusing is that it gives us purpose. When we have something on which to focus our efforts, it gives us a purpose, it gives us more drive, and we tend to try harder when we know on what we are focusing.

Always chase your passion

For me, when it comes to my business, I have been working on focus lately. I am an entrepreneur. I like to start new businesses and get them up and running. It is something that gives me joy when I see a new enterprise of mine start to take off and flourish. Being an entrepreneur is good and enjoyable to me, but it is not always the best thing when it comes to putting money in your pocket. Almost any entrepreneur would tell you that you have to come up with and try a lot of ideas before you get one that really pays off. Oh, many will experience some success, but to really put serious bucks on the table, you need a really good idea, and you need to develop it properly. Those kind of things don’t happen with every idea that comes to your mind. Far from it.

I have businesses and activities in my life from a number of different areas or niches. Most of my niches that I am involved with involve writing in one way or another. Like this site, I write here, and I make a bit of money from it. Well, it happens that many of my niches are relatively small niches that are not overly popular. In today’s age of the Internet, though, even a very small niche can pay decent money, because the potential audience, although small in a percentage term, is still very large because you are drawing from a worldwide audience these days. Gone are the days when your potential audience was either only near your base of operations, or was relatively expensive to reach because you had to use some kind of mass media marketing to reach a wider audience. Now, with the Internet, you can reach people anywhere in the world for virtually nothing, if you know how to find them.

Two guys who are focusing on what they are good at - Bob Martin & Matt Mullenweg

Over the years, I have had people… mentors and friends, who have encouraged me to widen my niches into bigger areas with a larger audience by moving into other things than where I am really the best. I mean, I could choose to write about topics that have millions of potential readers. Instead, I choose to focus on niches that have a smaller number of readers, but those are areas where I have much more knowledge and am also more comfortable. In short, I like to focus in areas where I have a passion.

Lately, one of my niches, probably the one that I am most passionate about has begun to pay off for me much better than it has in the past. Because of this increase in fortunes, it has caused me to think. Instead of following the advice of changing into bigger niches, I am now thinking that it is better for me to focus in on the things that I am best at, the things that have my true passion. I have always been a big believer in two things:

When you do something that you are truly passionate about, the money will come. There are other things you can substitute for money – fame, satisfaction, etc.

You should focus in on things that you have knowledge about.

I believe that these two things are important, and when done in conjunction with each other you can really be successful.

So, with the moves I am seeing relative to one of my niches beginning to gel and really “pay off,” I am only having my original thinking reinforced. I am realizing that my thinking was right all along, and that I need to hone in even more in those areas where I have a true passion.

For all of you smart people out there reading this, I really encourage you to focus your energy in areas where you are good already. Hone your skills and your knowledge. Always get better. Oh, it’s always good to spread your wings a bit and explore new things… but always keep your eyes where your passion is too.

A few days ago, I was browsing the Web a bit, and I decided to go an visit a website of a fellow that I know. His website, frankly, is not very nice. It’s poorly laid out. Many of the articles are not well written, or about subjects that tend to really bore me. But, the person who owns the site is a friend, and I do visit his site, because from time to time I find something there that is worth looking at.

This person who publishes this site is somebody who always seems to be short on money. There have been times in the past when I have even sent meals to his house, because I knew that he had nothing to eat, and no money to buy food. Because he is my friend, I wanted to help him. There have been other times when I have given him money, or loaned him money. I don’t mind, because he is my friend. There were also times when I wanted to help him, and I have tried to teach him how to make some money online. I showed him different methods of making some money through a website. He has tried to do what I have shown him over the years, but he has never been able to make any money online, and he has told me so. When I go look and try to figure out why he is not able to make money online using the methods that I have shown him, it is obvious to me why he is not earning anything – because he does not follow the simple instructions that I have given him. I don’t know why he doesn’t do it the way I explain to him, but he does not.

When you want to make money on the Internet - Who ya gonna call?

So, anyway, when I went to visit this fellow’s site the other day, I just wanted to see what he had been up to, what kind of information he had on the site and such. I was pretty surprised when I read his first article right on the top of his page. He was selling information on “how to make money online.” What? How could he show others how to make money online when he has made no money himself online?

Making Money Online!

I make my living online. I have been making money online for about 15 years now. For the past decade I have made all of my income online. I have no other income to live on other than what I earn online. I know how to make money on the Internet. I am not bragging, I am only stating a fact. What I am saying is no different than if you said “I make all of my income by working at a bank” or perhaps “I make my living by working as an engineer.” The fact is that I make my money on the Internet.

So, when I saw this article from this fellow, it really surprised me, frankly it shocked me. I sell e-Books and other materials teaching others how to use the Internet to earn income too, so I have no problem with people doing that. However, I do feel that if a person wants to charge people money to show them how to do something, that the person doing the “teaching” should know what he is talking about, don’t you think? The thought that came to my mind is “who ya gonna call if you want to learn how to make money online?”

One of the things that really bothers me about this is that a lot of people think that “making money online” is a scam, and that anybody who tries to sell information on how to make money online is only trying to scam people. People like my friend, who are trying to sell information about something that they know nothing about, give people like me and others who legitimately do earn their living online a bad name.

Anyway, I would advise you that if you want to learn how to earn online, you should really seek out the information from somebody who really does make money online. If you see an ad for somebody who wants to help you make money online, the first thing you should do is to look at the person and ask yourself – “how much money does this guy really make online now?” If he is not making his living legitimately online, he really can’t teach you how to do it, can he?

In the past week or so, I had an opportunity to view a BBC TV Mini-series called Rebels and Redcoats, which focused on the American Revolutionary War in the 1770′s and 1780′s. I have always been a fan of history and enjoy learning more on the subject. I would not, could not, consider myself an expert on the American Revolution by any means, but I probably know more on the subject than the “average” American, I would say.

Frankly, I had never heard of this TV mini-series before, but last week I was thumbing through a guide of TV shows, looking for something that I might enjoy viewing, and came upon a listing for this show. I almost passed it by, not having a huge interest. But, then it struck me. Hmm… BBC. BBC? Of course, the BBC is the British Broadcasting Corporation. The thought came to my mind… “Hmm… I have never thought about the American Revolution from the British Standpoint!” So, I decided that this might be an interesting show to watch.

The end of the American Revolution. The British Surrender to the Americans as the French look on.

The show was a series of four 1 hour programs. As I sat down to watch Episode 1, which was entitled “The Shot Heard Around the World” I was ready to see what this was all about. The show was hosted by British Historian Richard Holmes. He seemed a nice and likable fellow, but as he got started in Episode 1, I found myself feeling a bit hostile toward him. I could not really understand my feelings, because I have no anti-British feelings. After all, I am an American, and the British are among our very closest of allies. We have a rich history of cooperation with the Brits. Of course, not during the American Revolution, though, because the Americans were fighting against the British for our freedom and liberty at that time. So, as Holmes began the show, he was in Boston, MA, and he was talking about the American Rebels who were going against the British and trying to “stir things up” in the colonies so as to start a fight against the British. He had some harsh words to say for American heroes like Samuel Adams and other early voices in the revolutionary movement. In fact, he called them “propagandists.” I felt offended and angry at some of the things he was saying.

British General Cornwallace

Of course, this was all coming from a British perspective, and I was looking at this through an American perspective. We were on polar ends of the debate, something which I was not used to for a Brit and an American.

After the first episode aired, I spent some time thinking about my feelings and reactions to the show. I did find the show quite interesting and eagerly awaited the next episodes. As I analyzed my thinking, I calmed down a bit, and wanted to just try to watch the show dispassionately to see what was said, and compare that to the things I learned during my American Education. I realized, of course, that the education I received may be tainted a bit in favor of the American side, while the TV show seemed most certainly tainted toward the British. Naturally.

One of the comparisons that Holmes kept bringing to the forefront during the show was that the American Revolution had close parallels to the Vietnam War in the 1960′s and 70′s. Hmm… I had never thought of that before. How could it be.

Of course, the comparison was that the British forces were equivalent to the US forces in Vietnam, while the American Revolutionaries were equivalent to the Viet Cong. This kind of sat uneasily with me. I am a bit young to say that the Vietnam War was the war of my generation, yet I was just becoming a teenager as the conflict ended. As many Americans would testify, the Vietnam War was a very decisive subject among American people. The American Revolution would have nearly complete support as an honorable war among Americans, though. So, how could the two be compared with each other?

Well, from a British perspective, the analogy was pretty spot on, as I kept listing to the comparisons throughout the series. When we Americans went into Vietnam, we were the powerful force, a world power, yet the lowly Viet Cong beat us, or at least fought to a draw, depending on the perspective. Same thing in the Revolution, the Brits were no doubt the world Superpower at the time, yet a rag tag band of American “rebels” (the show was constantly calling the Americans rebels, which I suppose they were from the Brit view) beat the Brits. Another comparison which was given was that in Vietnam the Americans won almost all of the battles, yet lost the war. Same thing with the Revolution, the Brits won the vast majority of the battles, yet lost the war there. Probably the most accurate comparison was that the British were fighting in a land that they were not familiar with, just as the Americans did in Vietnam. Being unfamiliar was a disadvantage and helped the superpower be overwhelmed by a less powerful force. Anyway, there were plenty of such Vietnam War vs. Revolutionary War comparisons, and the more I listened, the more I started agreeing with the comparison.

In the end, this was a highly interesting TV series for me, and I learned a thing or two – both about the War itself and also about myself. I had never considered the war from the British perspective, nor, do I think, have most Americans.

So, what does this have to do with Habits for Smart People? Well, it is a good habit to view a problem or a situation from multiple viewpoints. Don’t get pigeonholed into a single point of view if you are making an evaluation, if you do that, your final results may not be accurate.

Personal responsibility is a very important concept that a lot of people seem to ignore. When something is your fault, do you own up to your responsibility? Or, do you try to pass the blame, or ignore it altogether?

I want to tell you a story today about a time when a lady believed so much in personal responsibility that she even accepted responsibility when the event in question was not even really her fault. I believe that this lady did a very honorable thing, even if it was far beyond what her true responsibility was. This story revolves around a very painful event in my life.

In September 1979, my younger sister was killed by a drunk driver. She was only 15 years old at the time of her death. Her name was Charlotte.

One day, after school, Charlotte had to stay late for a practice session for a fire baton twirling group that she was a member of. The practice session lasted for several hours after school ended. After the practice ended, Charlotte was driving home. Yes, although Charlotte was only 15 she was driving. This was perfectly legal, because we lived in Louisiana at the time, and the legal driving age there was 15 years old, and she had a legitimate driver’s license.

We lived about 10 miles outside the city. As Charlotte drove home, out in the countryside, she came to a hill, and as she reached the top of that hill, her life changed in a heartbeat. There was an older man, perhaps in his 60′s, although I don’t recall his age, who was coming to the top of the same hill from the other direction. He was drunk, and he was driving on the wrong side of the road. Because they met each other at the very peak of the hill, they had very little time to react to one another, since they didn’t see each other coming. The man was drunk anyway, so perhaps he would not have been able to react in any event. Charlotte was a young driver, so perhaps her reaction time was slower than an experienced driver. Whatever the reason, they hit each other head-on at the top of that hill. The drunk fellow died instantly, as he was thrown from his vehicle. My sister, Charlotte did not die immediately, but rather lived long enough to be sent to a hospital. But, as I said, her life was changed, because before she was able to make it to the hospital, she passed away.

It’s a sad story, no doubt, and it had a major impact on my life, but how is this related to personal responsibility? Well, that comes a bit later.

A few weeks or maybe a couple of months after this traffic accident, a lady showed up at my father’s office. My father didn’t know who the lady was, but she said that she wanted to speak to my father in private. So, my father invited her into his private office, and they sat down to talk. The lady told my father that she was the wife of the man who killed my sister. She apologized to my father, and begged his forgiveness. My father, as would be expected, was quite shocked by this. It is not often that somebody would do something like this. The lady was taking personal responsibility for something that her husband did!

This really had a deep impact on my father. He told the lady that he could understand how she felt, because they had both lost a loved on on that highway that night. He did not blame the lady, or get mad at her. It was not her fault, after all.

I thought about this incident the other day, and it really struck me how honorable this lady was in her actions. I had not really thought about this for perhaps 20 years or more, and when I remembered it, it brought a bit of a tear to my eye. Both for the memory of my sister, and the honor that this lady showed in a trying time.

That was more than 30 years ago, and I don’t know for sure, but suspect that the lady has passed on by now. Wherever she is, I hope that she is resting in peace, or living in peace, because she did an honorable thing, no doubt. I certainly harbor no ill will toward her. In fact, I don’t even feel any anger toward her husband either.

I am sure that most readers have heard the old saying – “Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched.” It truly is a bad habit to get into, without a doubt.

I thought of this saying just this morning when I was reviewing my earnings from some advertising that I had placed on one of my websites. I have been using this advertiser on a number of my sites for several years now, and the income that they produce for me is very good. I would say that they are probably my best advertiser on any of my sites, without a doubt.

Over the past two months or so, my earnings from this advertiser have really increased greatly, and very quickly. You see, I get paid based on results. The better the ad performs for the advertiser, the more they pay me. If the ad is on my site, but the advertiser makes little or no money, well, like them, I make very little myself. So, over the past couple of months I have been very happy with the performance, and with my earnings in particular.

Oops, these aren't chickens, but it's not good to count any birds before they hatch!

However, in the past few days, I have seen a downturn in earnings. Today, my earnings sprang back to previous levels, though, so everything is good. But, results of the past few days left me feeling somewhat bad, because earnings that I had started counting on just were not there.

Ah, those are chickens. Some have hatched, some have not!

That’s the bad news… I had been counting my chickens already, and they had yet to hatch!

The fact is, when we start seeing results to our hard work, it is not time to rest and watch as everything starts to pay off. When the results start to come in, it is a good sign for us, the things we are doing are right! However, now that the work we did has been shown to be producing the results we expected, it is time to redouble our efforts and make sure that things continue going down the right path. If we start to rest, we will forget things. We will become weary of hard work, and we won’t follow through. Seeing the results that we want is a good sign that we are doing the right thing. It should also be a sign to us that we need to keep working if we want the results to continue paying off for us.

Counting your chickens before they hatch is an old saying that might not hold much meaning for us when we think about it. However, as with many such “old sayings” there is some truth there, and we should be sure to follow that truth.

Good luck to you with all of your projects, and keep your nose to the grindstone if you want your work to continue paying your dividends!

This site is about habits for smart people. I do consider myself smart, and other people tell me I am smart.

Smart people can have good habits, and we should strive to keep doing these good things. We can also have bad habits, and we should work to try to overcome our bad habits.

One bad habit is setting up a website, having good ideas on how to populate that site with informative and entertaining content, and then dropping the ball. That is what I’ve done on this site. I got it started, and wrote some articles, interesting ones, I hope. But, I dropped the ball. I stopped posting new content here. That is something that is a bad habit, and I want to address that.

Gotta get back to the keyboard!

There are multiple ways to address something that has become a bad habit. In this case, the bad habit of ignoring this site. I can see two ways of addressing this bad habit.

I can simply shut down the site and move on with something else. By doing this, I no longer need to worry myself about needing to write articles to put here.

I can push myself to change this habit, turn it around, and start posting new content here.

I choose to do #2. I am planning to redouble my efforts and start posting content here for those who read the site to enjoy. Frankly, I am lucky if I still have readers here, because I have ignored the site, and most readers have probably already given up on finding interesting content here. However, there are things I can do to win readers back, and to start building up new readers here. I intend to do those things.

It takes time to build an audience, no doubt about that. For those who are brand new at blogging, it can take a very long time. Even if you have great content, great insight and such, it just takes time for people to find you. In my case, it is easier to gain a loyal following of leaders, because I already have other popular sites. By promoting this site to my already loyal readers on other sites, I can build up a following here more quickly than somebody who is just getting started. However, the downside is that if you go to the well too often, and then you don’t delivery, well, you risk the chance of losing followers, or if they continue following you on other sites, they just won’t follow you on new sites, because they feel that you lack the commitment to keep it going.

I want to turn that around. I want to develop a new good habit of delivering good relevant content here.

Check back and see how I do. It is my current plan to start adding a couple of new articles here every week. Hope to see you again!

A lot of times, I hear from people who are planning to start up some kind of new business, usually something online. Often, I hear from people that I really don’t know well, but who follow me through my various websites, but sometimes the people I hear from are good friends. Usually people who write to ask me questions are looking for business advice. Sometimes they are just so excited about their new business idea that they want to share it with somebody. I am always happy to listen, and I usually try to offer some kind of advice to these folks, trying to help them succeed. Sometimes, they appreciate the advice, other times they actually get offended, especially if I think that they need to think their idea through a little more carefully. Honestly, if I offer advice that they need to think it through more, I am only trying to help them out, saving them from frustration that they will certainly be facing in the future, given their plans.

One of the biggest issues that I see people facing is that they have improperly priced their product or service. When you are going to offer a product or service, it is important that you consider all of the costs involved in offering the product that you have in mind. Most people forget about many of the costs involved in their offering.

Making money online

Sometimes, I get e-mails from people who actually have really good ideas for a product that I believe is very good, but they have not thought through the pricing carefully enough. I remember one time a while back, a fellow had an idea for an item he was going to sell online, and I thought it was an excellent idea. He told me that the item cost him $10 to produce. He was planning to sell it for $11. I wrote back and told the fellow that he was going to lose money on every single sale. Although this incident is 100% true, there is an old joke along these lines:

We lose a little bit on each sale, but we make up for it with the huge volume!

As any businessman would know, that statement is impossible. If you lose a bit on each sale… the more you sell, the more money you will lose! I wrote to this fellow and explained to him that he was going to lose money with his idea, but that he should consider raising the selling price to better cover his costs, and to also make a nice profit. His product was unique enough that he could have easily sold the product for $20 or $25, and still sold a lot of them. However, this fellow got angry at my reply and told me that I didn’t know what I was talking about.

Well, let’s look at this. If you have a product that costs you $10, can you really sell it for $11 and make a profit?

The first thing to make sure of is to figure out if it really costs you $10 to buy or produce the item. Perhaps he was right, maybe it really did cost him $10. Let’s give him the benefit of the doubt and agree that it really did cost him $10, and not a penny more.

He will still lose money. How? Why?

The reason that he will lose money is because there are other costs to consider other than just the cost of the unit. This fellow was talking about selling his product online, on his own website.

OK, it will cost money to build and maintain the website. The design itself, even if you do it yourself (which I generally do with my sites) costs money to make. If not direct out of pocket money, your time has a value, right?

Next, it costs money to keep your website online. You need to pay a hosting company for the space where you keep your website. For a cheapie host, you will probably spend $8 to $10 per month for that. If you have a serious business going, you might pay a lot more. If you have a lot of traffic and need a dedicated server for your business, you might be paying $200 to $1,000 per month for the dedicated server. I have, in the past, paid as much as $250 per month to host my websites. That is serious money, and you must recover that money, and also you need to consider that as part of the cost of selling your good or service on the Internet.

Next, if you are going to be selling a product or service on the Internet, that usually means that you will be needing to accept Credit Card payments, or some kind of online payment. This costs money. It is cheaper if you live somewhere like the USA, although it still costs money. But, if you live somewhere like the Philippines, like I do, credit card transactions cost serious money. A mainstream credit card processor will not accept your business if you are not in the USA. So, you have to find a service that will accept your business, and they will charge more, because they feel it is a higher risk dealing with a business in a country like the Philippines. About the best you will be able to do is to find a processor who will charge you 5% of the price of the product, and also a “per transaction” fee, of around 30 to 50 US cents. You have to pay these fees for every single item you sell. Many processors, on top of the fees that I mentioned will also charge you a monthly fee just for using the service (or not using it, if you have no sales). This could run $100 or more per month. So, if you sell one of those items for $11, just the credit card fees alone will cost you $0.85 or so, perhaps more (and this doesn’t even count any monthly fee).

So, on that $11 sale, you just made a huge profit of 15 cents. And, you also need to subtract off all of those other costs that I mentioned. Also, you didn’t pay any employees to do the work involved – remember, there are office tasks, packaging, shipping and other duties that must be done to complete the sale. So, even if you don’t even count the web hosting, and such, you made only 15 cents on an $11 sale. So, lets say that you do $100,000 in sales per month (which I doubt this fellow would have even been close to), your profit would have been $1,300. Can you imagine how much work you will need to do to successfully process and complete $100,000 in sales in a month? My friend, add in the real costs of employees, web hosting and all that other stuff, and you just lost money by selling $100,000 worth of goods.

So, it is important to consider all of your costs in doing business. If you don’t, you will lose money. And, don’t forget that your time has a value too. If you are working 8 to 12 hours per day, and not considering that time as part of the cost of doing business, well, you are not really being serious about business.
