app_sphere_doubleclick-150x150

Continuing our series on designing a new website, and keeping money making in mind as you go through the steps of conceptualizing the site and getting it set up, today we will look at how you can best deliver ads to your readers in a way that will make you the most money.  In our last article in the series, we talked about choosing a platform on which to build your site.  I think that today I might tell you about something that many people seem not to know about. What is it that I have in mind, which you may not know about?  Well, I call it GAM, because it used to be named Google Ad Manager.  The name was changed last year to … [Read more...]

Designing a new site: Platform

content_management_systems-150x150

OK, so I recently started a new series of articles called “Designing a new site” and this is the second article in the series.  Today’s article will be about choosing a platform for your new site. What do I mean by “platform”?  Well, I mean what kind of software will the site be built upon?  Maybe you won’t have a software platform at all, but these days, most sites do.  For me, I build nearly 100% of my sites on the WordPress platform.  WordPress is blogging software, but these days a lot of people are using it for Content Management as well.   What is Content Management?  Well, generally, Content … [Read more...]

Why RSS?

rss

Do you know what RSS is? Some people say it stands for “Really Simple Syndication.” Others argue that it stands for “RDF Site Summary,” and still others say that it means “Rich Site Summary.” The most widely accepted notion, though, is that RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication.” That is what I mean when I say RSS. So, if it is Really Simple Syndication, what does that mean? Well, simply put, it means that if you offer RSS on your site, people can subscribe to it and have it delivered to their desktop. When you publish an article on a site with RSS, that article will be pushed to your … [Read more...]

Comments or no comments?

comment-300x198

This morning, I came across a very interesting article… err… debate regarding whether or not the average blog should use comments or disable them altogether.  Well, I have my own thoughts on this, but first, let me point you to the article. People want to comment! The debate can be found on a site called Think Traffic.  I don’t normally follow this site, so I don’t know much about it.  A friend sent me the link to the article, Debate! Should You Allow Comments on Your Blog? Find Out What Two Remarkably Popular Bloggers Think, in which two popular bloggers debate the question about allowing comments. Now, let me … [Read more...]

Getting traffic on your site!

OK, so you build a new website. It’s all fancy, and you put a lot of hard work into it, right? Well, why is nobody coming? Remember the old movie where there was a kind of “catch-phrase?” “If you build it, they will come.” This voice was ringing in the mind of Kevin Costner in the movie “Field of Dreams.” He built the baseball diamond in his cornfield, and sure enough, people came. It doesn’t necessarily happen that way on the web. People don’t go to websites that they don’t know about. So, how do you make sure that people know about your new site? Well, it can be a little … [Read more...]

It’s already 2011, time to get to work!

goal-sm3-150x150

Yes, this past weekend brought us a new year, a fresh start for all of us.  But, just because it is a new year, that doesn’t mean that all is good and we can just rest!  No, in fact, the new year has brought with it a bunch of work that needs to be done!  Yes, no matter who you are or what you do, we all have little tasks that await us.  If you have your own websites or blogs, you have a little more work to do than others do! Yes, on January First, I was doing some blog reading, and checked in on one of my favorite sites, Mike’s Life.  MikeCJ, as he calls himself, has not been blogging for very long, only a couple or three … [Read more...]

Top Secret: Easier Blogrolls

wp-150x150

If you are a serious web publisher, you probably have multiple websites.  Not certainly, but probably, I’d say.  In my own case, I have dozens of websites.  I also have certain pages within websites that I try to highlight by linking to them.  For example, if you have a blog about caring for cats you want to link to that.  If you have a single page on that blog that sells your e-book about how to save a fortune on cat food, you probably want a separate link in your blogroll that links to that one page too. Why so hush-hush? Problem is, it seems like a big job to set up a blogroll to your various sites if you have a lot of them.  … [Read more...]

Interview with Tom Nixon

tom

Last week, I announced that I have a new book on the market, 49 Ways to make a living in the Philippines.  It's a book with a bunch of ideas on how you can earn a living while living here in the Philippines.  Of course, many of these ideas can be used no matter where in the world you choose to live, but since the topic of living in the Philippines is kind of my specialty, I wrote the book with that audience in mind. Today, I am happy to announce that I was recently interviewed by Tom Nixon, and he has published the first part of the interview on his SmallPress Blog today.  To read the interview, just head over to Tom's blog.  Tom is a … [Read more...]

Do you sell e-books?

sony_ebook-150x150

I have been talking about publishing and writing books a lot on this site lately.  Why?  Because I think it is going to be my next step in making money online.  I have some subjects that I have some authority on, and I feel that I have some books inside me just waiting to get out too, so why not write some books and earn a little money from them?  Frankly, a lot of the subjects that I want to write on are based on e-mail questions that I get almost every day anyway, so why not expand on my answers, and also make a little money from answering these questions for people. One of the discussions that we have been having on this site lately is … [Read more...]

It’s a business!

businesspeople

In the past few weeks, I have read a number of articles on the net, on various blogs that had a similar theme.  Reading these articles really reinforced some things that I already believe, and helped me reconsider those thoughts, and as I reconsidered, I came to the same conclusion that I had already developed in the past, which was the conclusion of the authors of the articles too. Basically, the theme of these articles is about earning money online, and the fact that doing so is a business, not just a time to play around.  Many people start blogging, or some other way of earning money online, and they will put AdSense ads, or something … [Read more...]
