My journey will continue

Tuna Sashimi is delicious and nutritious

Today, I am going to once again get started on my journey. Actually, I have been thinking about it for a while now, wanting to be back on the road. It's been a few years now since I have seriously progressed on this journey, but I am ready to get it going again. I am talking about a journey down the road to better health.  Primarily, I am talking about weight loss. I have struggled all of my life with excessive weight, and in my adult life with obesity.  I have made progress in the past decade, though.  I first moved to the Philippines in May 2000.  While still living in the States, in the late 90's, I reached my maximum … [Read more...]

Can food draw the tourists?

food

Can food draw the tourists? Yeah, exactly. What are you smoking today, Bob?  People can get food anywhere in the world, why would they travel for food? Well, people already do travel for food! There are lots of food enthusiasts out there, they often call themselves “foodies.”  These are people who will travel to different destinations to sample different types of food or drinks.  For example, Thai cuisine is quite famous and well liked by millions of people, and people will actually travel to Thailand on a “Food Tour” where they will visit restaurants in different parts of the country to experience true Thai cuisine … [Read more...]

What is a mangosteen?

mangosteen_bottom-150x1501

One of my favorite fruits in the Philippines is mangosteen. A lot of people ask me, “Bob, what’s a mangosteen?“  Well, a mangosteen, as I said already, is a fruit. “Ah, it’s some kind of a mango, then?“  Well, no, it is not a mango, nor is it anything like a mango.  It is not related to a mango, it’s not even the same color as a mango.  I am not quite certain why it has a similar name, but it just does. A mangosteen is a deep purple color.  It has a few green “leaves” on the top.  I put leaves in quotation marks, because they look like leaves, but they are hard, part of the piece of … [Read more...]

CTRES? Yes!

Selection-of-Fruits-150x150

Over the years, here on LiP, I have published a “Top Ten List of Davao Restaurants” fairly regularly.  It’s been a couple of years, though, since I have published an updated top 10 list.  The biggest reason for that is because we don’t go out to eat as often as we used to.  Feyma and I have become more “home cooks” than people who eat out a lot.  But, of course, we still do eat out from time to time. This Wednesday, we had the opportunity to check out a new place here in Davao, a restaurant with an unusual name:  CTRES, it is pronounced like:  See Tres (Tres rhymes with dress). I now have a new #1 … [Read more...]

Last week was a nice treat for us here in Davao.  Dave Starr and his family made a journey down south to Davao, and I had an opportunity to spend a fair amount of time with Dave and his family while they were here.  I have met Dave previously, but this visit we got a little more time than previously, I think, to talk and compare notes on various issues.  For those who do not know who Dave is, he is the owner of the PhilFAQs site, and has been living in the Philippines for a number of years now.  I have known Dave, mostly online, for several years now, and he is one of my closer friends on the Internet.  We share a lot of e-mails … [Read more...]

OMG! I’ve been hijacked!

Over this past weekend, Feyma and I were watching a TV show about street food in the USA.  They showed street foods from different locations all over the USA on this show, and believe me, most of it looked extremely delicious. As we started to watch the show, in the introduction they were showing quick shots of many of the street foods as a sort of teaser.  I saw something that made me sit up and take notice.  They showed some pork that looked exactly like Liempo Balamban, the rolled pork that Feyma and I regularly cook on my MindanaoBob’s BBQ Grill.  I told Feyma that I saw what looked like our pork recipe, and she quickly agreed … [Read more...]

The love of beef

porterhouse-150x150

I admit… I love beef.  Good flavorful and tender beef.  There is no meat better in my opinion.  Problem is, it’s not easy to find “good beef” in the Philippines. I rarely eat beef though, because it is usually so tough, and virtually inedible here in the Philippines. A few years back, Feyma and I went to a restaurant in Davao and I ordered a steak.  I wash shocked when I ate the steak because it was so tender I didn’t even need a knife to cut it.  The owner of the restaurant is a friend, so I asked him how he got such tender beef, and where I could get it.  He told me that he bought it at the same place … [Read more...]

There is simply no comparison

A lot of times I get e-mails with a certain question.  Or, when I meet people who are visiting Davao, I get the same question.  People always are interested to learn what the differences are between different parts of the Philippines. Where is best to live, Bob, Cebu or Davao? Which City has the best schools in the Philippines? Which part of the country has the best beaches? Are the women in Mindanao, the Visayas or Luzon the most beautiful? I hear these questions and other similar questions almost every day from people I come in contact with, either in person or via e-mail. Honestly it can be hard to answer questions like these, because … [Read more...]

The Mieles and the Martins

Miele_Martin

This weekend was a great LiP get together!  One of our popular LiP writers, John Miele, and his family came to Davao for the weekend.  John was accompanied by his wife, Rebecca and their son Juanito. John came to Davao to sort of enjoy a get-away from the city, and all that is associated with it.  John and Rebecca chose a great time to visit Davao, because this past weekend was the climax of the famous Davao Kadayawan Festival!  John and Rebecca, along with Juanito were able to watch the Kadayawan Street Dancing festivities right from their hotel, and from everything John said, I think they enjoyed it!  I am not going to get into details … [Read more...]

Will you or not?

bulad-150x150

Hi Everybody!  Not much news to share today here on LiP, so I thought I’d make this a short article, and off on a slightly different tangent. Yes, it will be short, but I’ll be asking you a question at the end of the article, and what I am hoping is to turn the discussion [...] … [Read more...]
