Corn in the Philippines

corn

Do you like corn?  I do.  I especially enjoy a really fresh piece of corn on the cob.  There is just nothing quite as good as a fresh piece of juicy and sweet corn on the cob!  Problem is that it can be quite hard to find a decent piece of corn here in the Philippines. The Philippines is really an agricultural Country, so you would expect that you could find some good corn here, but the fact is that it is very hard to find such.  Most of the corn that is grown in the Philippines is feed corn, used to feed animals.  It is very dry and hard.  Not delicious to eat. I can remember when we lived in the States, we lived in an area where … [Read more...]

Giveaway Part 2 – Students in Need

Bob-with-Riza-150x150

If you read my article on Monday, you know that the 2010 LiP Christmas Giveaway happened last Friday, December 24, 2010.  I told you in that article, though, that there was an unexpected twist this year, something totally new for the LiP Christmas Giveaway.  To me, what happened last week will change the LiP Giveaway forever, and it will be changed in a good way. It all started last Tuesday.  Feyma and I like to move the Christmas Giveaway to a different area each year, and on Tuesday I asked Feyma where we should go this year to give away the Christmas treats.  We were honestly having a hard time deciding where we would go.  We have … [Read more...]

2010 LiP Christmas Giveaway – Part 1

Helping-Kids-is-always-a-Pleasure-150x150

2010 is really a banner year for the LiP Christmas Giveaway!  For those who are new to the site and don’t know about the LiP Christmas Giveaway, I will start out by giving a bit of history.  For 8 years now, Feyma and I have been spreading the Christmas Cheer around Mindanao by giving out food and treats to the poor in areas in and near Davao City.  In the beginning, we did this on our own, using our own money.  As the years went by, and this website got bigger and more popular, we decided to invite LiP readers to join us in the giving by donating money to the event, and we would use the money to give out food to the needy here.  … [Read more...]

Treat yourself! Here’s how!

49-150x150

If you are an expat living in the Philippines like I am, surely there are times when you miss something from “back home.”  I know that I do from time to time.  I used to get that feeling a lot more often than I do now, but it still happens.  I guess that having lived here for over 10 years now, I have kind of “kicked the habit” on a lot of “things” from back in the States.  Still, though, you get a craving for something from time to time. In my book, 49 Ways to make a living in the Philippines, one of the possible business ideas that I wrote about is a Balikbayan Box service.  What I mean is a service … [Read more...]

It’s that time of year again

LiP-Santa-150x150

Yes, as the title says, it’s that time of year again, holiday time.  Today, US time, is Thanksgiving in the USA.  It’s the day after Thanksgiving here in the Philippines, although actually Thanksgiving is not celebrated here in the Philippines, obviously.  Thanksgiving is an American holiday, commemorating the arrival of the first Pilgrims in the USA, and how they gave thanks for the blessings that the Lord provided for them. Our Martin tradition is that we celebrate American Thanksgiving even though we live in the Philippines, because we enjoy it, and we do want to give thanks for the blessings that we have in life.  We, … [Read more...]

What’s in the honey, honey?

Pure-Honey-150x150

The other day, Feyma offered to cook me some biscuits for breakfast, and I readily accepted her offer.  It sounded good.  She told me that we had some honey, and asked if I wanted to have some honey on my biscuits.  Sure thing!  Sounded delicious, so I was looking forward to a delicious breakfast. I usually eat breakfast in my office while I am working, and that day was no exception.  When my nephew brought my biscuits and honey, it looked quite good.  The honey, though, did look a little different from what I was used to seeing.  It was dark brown instead of the more normal golden color of honey.  But, hey, I didn’t really … [Read more...]
