Doing the perimeter thing

mangoes1

What do I mean about "the perimeter thing"?  Just keep reading and you will understand. About 5 or 6 weeks ago, I happened to be watching CNN to catch up on the news.  It happened that they had more of a "feature" show on, rather than the news, Anderson Cooper 360.  I watched for a bit, and found that they had Jamie Oliver on.  If you don't know who Jamie Oliver is, he is a British Chef.  He is a TV Chef.  He has had a number of cooking shows on British TV over the years.  He's OK, I'm not a huge fan, but I have watched some of his shows from time to time, and my wife Feyma has picked up a few good recipes from Jamie's show over the … [Read more...]

Are stupid ideas a waste of time?

stupid_idea

If you think about the title of this article, Are stupid ideas a waste of time?, of course you would say "Yes, they sure are."  But, I would argue that they are not.  Stupid ideas are not a waste of time, in fact, they are very valuable in my opinion! How could it be? Have you ever heard of brainstorming?  Do you know what that is?  For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, brainstorming is a process of thinking of all kinds of ideas.  The best way for a brainstorming session to be conducted is to have a group of people, maybe 6 to 10 people or so.  You agree in advance that all ideas will be considered relevant, nothing is stupid … [Read more...]

This and that… and the other!

Feyma with some Christmas Gifts we will give out

Well, it's been a busy few weeks in the Martin household in Davao.  I've been busy with a lot of different things, it seems.  I suppose that the holidays are like that.  So, I thought I'd just write a "general" article that is really not about anything in particular.  Just an update of what has been going on, and maybe an update of some of my more recent articles here on MindanaoBob, my personal website. One of the big pieces of news here, in my opinion, is that I have a new cat!  I should say that "we" (as a family) have a new cat, but I consider this one to be "my cat" and she stays in my office and in our bedroom, so she hangs out with … [Read more...]

Keeping it up!

healthy

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an article about getting my diabetes and diet under control.  As I said, I had seen some very nice results as far as my blood glucose readings went.  They were pretty close to normal, which made me quite happy. Well, that was a one day more than 2 weeks ago when I wrote that, and I am happy to say that my readings are holding.  My diet is still under control, and I am feeling very good.  Amazing what a little more exercise and living a reasonable lifestyle will do for you! When my diabetes was out of control, I had a big problem with infections.  Almost any wound that I got, be it a paper cut, or even … [Read more...]

Feeling good

Diabetes

For several weeks now, I have had my diabetes in good control.  I had gone for a long time without controling it, and I feel a lot better now with my blood glucose level at more normal levels.  Over the past few weeks, my blood glucose readings have been running from a low of 101 to a high of 145.  I have seen no reading higher than 145, which I would have considered very low just a few weeks ago. Not only is it just nice to see these normal levels of blood sugar, I also feel a lot better.  The good feeling is both physical and also mental as well.  When your glucose is out of control, you tend to be moody, get angry easily, etc. and I … [Read more...]

Learning about diet

Eating Fish

In the past few weeks, I have been making a serious effort to get better control over my eating, because my diabetes has been out of control, and I need to do something about it.  So far, I've been very successful, and I've brought my blood glucose levels down to fairly normal levels.  A blood glucose reading for a person without diabetes is generally around 120 or less after fasting overnight.  My blood glucose lately after fasting is running about 140 to 145, and pretty stable at that reading.  A little higher than a non-diabetic, but that is quite a good reading for me. Considering that just a few weeks ago my blood glucose was running … [Read more...]

The test strip scam

Test Strips

Over the past few months, I have let my diabetes get the better of me.  I have been having health problems lately because of the fact that I allowed my blood glucose level to get out of control.  Diabetes is not a forgiving disease.  If you don't control your diabetes, it controls you.  I am tired of being controlled by diabetes, and my poor control of the disease.  I am tired of feeling poorly.  I decided to do something about it. First step is that I got my blood glucose meter to check what my glucose level was.  It's hard to improve if you don't know exactly where you stand.  Oops.  There is a problem.  I don't have any test strips.  … [Read more...]

Dads have a big impact on us

dad

Our dads have a huge impact on our lives, sometimes good, sometimes bad.  A few days ago I was having a conversation with a man.  This fellow is of retirement age.  He told me about his dad, and how he had negative feelings to this day about his relationship with his dad.  He went on to say that it was silly for a man of his age to be talking of how his dad treated him and such.  I told him that I disagreed.  Talking about things that bring you pain is the best thing that you can do. Because of this conversation, I decided to share a little bit about my relationship with my dad, and how it affected me. When I was a child, my dad had a … [Read more...]

Is being smart a curse?

tnbrain

I am not trying to brag, or saying that I am better than others, but I will just say that I am a smart person.  I have a high IQ.  I also hear it all the time from people who say that I am smart, and such.  So, I simply accept the fact that I am smart as a fact.  Like I say, I am not trying make it seem that I am something that I am not, just accepting that what people tell me is true. The thing is, being smart is not necessarily always a good thing.  There are times when being dumb, or at least pretending to be dumb is the smart way to go.  If you are smart, people have very high expectations of you.  Even if you can meet the expectations, … [Read more...]

Change of plans

Well, I made a commitment to myself a few days ago that I was going to start walking regularly again.  I got started yesterday, walking about 1 mile.  Today, though, I had to make a change of plans!  It has been pouring down rain, at least moderate rain, since yesterday morning.  No signs of it letting up, either. So, due to the weather, I had to change my plans for walking today.  After I finish writing this, I will ride my stationary bike for a while, tough, in order to continue with increasing my exercise.  I prefer walking to riding an exercise bike, though, so I am looking forward to the storm passing.  I find riding the exercise … [Read more...]
