Change of plans

bike

Well, I made a commitment to myself a few days ago that I was going to start walking regularly again.  I got started yesterday, walking about 1 mile.  Today, though, I had to make a change of plans!  It has been pouring down rain, at least moderate rain, since yesterday morning.  No signs of it letting up, either. So, due to the weather, I had to change my plans for walking today.  After I finish writing this, I will ride my stationary bike for a while, tough, in order to continue with increasing my exercise.  I prefer walking to riding an exercise bike, though, so I am looking forward to the storm passing.  I find riding the … [Read more...]

Are stupid ideas a waste of time?

stupid_idea

If you think about the title of this article, Are stupid ideas a waste of time?, of course you would say "Yes, they sure are."  But, I would argue that they are not.  Stupid ideas are not a waste of time, in fact, they are very valuable in my opinion! How could it be? Have you ever heard of brainstorming?  Do you know what that is?  For those who are unfamiliar with the concept, brainstorming is a process of thinking of all kinds of ideas.  The best way for a brainstorming session to be conducted is to have a group of people, maybe 6 to 10 people or so.  You agree in advance that all ideas will be considered relevant, nothing is … [Read more...]

Continuing my jeepney adventures

New Friends

As I mentioned the other day, I've been riding jeepneys lately.  I consider it a further part of my acculturation to the Philippines.  I've already lived here a long time, more than a decade, but I can still learn more about the culture here and make efforts to better fit in culturally.  So, that is what I am doing. As far as I can recall, I don't think I've missed a single day of riding the jeepney somewhere since I started last week.  I've had mostly good adventures on the jeep, but the one bad one that I wrote about a couple days ago.  Today, I need to go to Union Bank for some business that I need to take care of there... so I'll … [Read more...]

My journey will continue

Tuna Sashimi is delicious and nutritious

Today, I am going to once again get started on my journey. Actually, I have been thinking about it for a while now, wanting to be back on the road. It's been a few years now since I have seriously progressed on this journey, but I am ready to get it going again. I am talking about a journey down the road to better health.  Primarily, I am talking about weight loss. I have struggled all of my life with excessive weight, and in my adult life with obesity.  I have made progress in the past decade, though.  I first moved to the Philippines in May 2000.  While still living in the States, in the late 90's, I reached my maximum … [Read more...]

I got started on exercise!

WALKING THE DOG

Remember the other day, I said that I wanted to start increasing my exercise regiment?  Well, I really got a big boost yesterday.  Feyma and I took a visiting friend to a place called "ON Farm" about 50 miles or so from where we live.  A new friend owns the place, and we decided to go up and visit!  We had never been to ON Farm before, so we had no idea what to expect. Well, the farm is not accessible by car, so we had to hike in.  Boy oh boy, what a hike it was!  And, it was all either a steep uphill or downhill climb too!  By the end of that walk, I was really exhausted!  And covered in sweat too!  The walk was well worth it, … [Read more...]

Oh, one more thing….

pedometer_on_hip_2

One thing I forgot to include on the last post. Here is evidence that exercise does good things: 7:15am - just after getting up from bed, my blood glucose was 128. 7:45am - ate breakfast, 2 fried eggs and two slices of ham. 9:30am - went walking for one hour - 2+ miles 10:30am - blood glucose after walking: 108. Nice! … [Read more...]

Walking and snapping photos

yellow_lab_annie288

I just got back from a good walk. It seems my routine now is to get up and work for about 2 hours, getting my work done before my employees come in. I need to finish my part of the job so that they can do theirs! Then, when my work is done, I go for about an hour of walking. I enjoy it a lot. When I walk, I always walk my dogs. We have two dogs, Yeller (pictured above) and Bingo. Yeller is about 1 year old now, and is a female. She is still a pup, and acts like one. Walking her is a job, she is always pulling on the leash, wanting to go in directions where I don't plan to go, etc. But, she is getting better. Bingo is a little … [Read more...]

This and that… and the other!

Feyma with some Christmas Gifts we will give out

Well, it's been a busy few weeks in the Martin household in Davao.  I've been busy with a lot of different things, it seems.  I suppose that the holidays are like that.  So, I thought I'd just write a "general" article that is really not about anything in particular.  Just an update of what has been going on, and maybe an update of some of my more recent articles here on MindanaoBob, my personal website. One of the big pieces of news here, in my opinion, is that I have a new cat!  I should say that "we" (as a family) have a new cat, but I consider this one to be "my cat" and she stays in my office and in our bedroom, so she hangs out … [Read more...]

Keeping it up!

healthy

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an article about getting my diabetes and diet under control.  As I said, I had seen some very nice results as far as my blood glucose readings went.  They were pretty close to normal, which made me quite happy. Well, that was a one day more than 2 weeks ago when I wrote that, and I am happy to say that my readings are holding.  My diet is still under control, and I am feeling very good.  Amazing what a little more exercise and living a reasonable lifestyle will do for you! When my diabetes was out of control, I had a big problem with infections.  Almost any wound that I got, be it a paper cut, or even … [Read more...]

Health Habits: Toenails!

Ugly-Toenail-150x150

Yes, toenails is a bit of a “strange” topic, but if you are smart, you will take care of your health.  Taking care of your toenails is part of that! I have diabetes. One thing that I did not realize until recently is that diabetes causes problems with toenails.  I knew that for the past 15 years or so, my toenails have gotten really ugly.  They are dry, have white patches on them, and they are very thick.  In fact, they are so thick that is is hard to cut them at times.  All in all, I can truly say that my toenails have gotten quite ugly, and it is embarrassing to leave them exposed and let other people see them. Olive Oil - … [Read more...]
