Exercise, Endorphins and Quicksand

tuyo66

I have written in my blog before how much I enjoy walking. Another type of exercise that I do regularly and enjoy is swimming. When I do these activities, I find that I am able to clear my head of mundane day to day things, and think about the things that really are important to me. As I walk, I experience a feeling of joy and peace. I get these feelings to a greater extent while exercising (and after exercise) than I do at other times. Another blog that I read regularly is called Ripples. The author, David St. Lawrence writes about life in a post-corporate world. David wrote a book called "Danger Quicksand Have a Nice Day". Anyway, … [Read more...]

A bit of disappointment

Ulaw

I had a bit of a disappointment yesterday, although upon reflection I realize that it should not disappoint me too much. You see, I went and weighed myself for the first time in 4 weeks. I do not have a scale at my house, but I weigh myself at the health club where I swim. I purposely do not weigh myself too often, because weight fluctuates, and a daily weighing does not necessarily mean that much. Well, last time I weighed myself, I was 307 pounds. I have not been under 300 pounds for probably 22 or 23 years, I guess, so I have been eager to go under 300 for the first time in a long time. I thought I would be at that interim goal … [Read more...]

A great and low fat lunch today!

veggies

I really had a great lunch today, and a very low fat one at that! On top of that, 2 hours after eating lunch, my blood glucose had dropped by 27 points, compared to before lunch. So, it was quite healthy for me, and satisfying too. Do you know what Pomelo is? It is similar to a grapefruit, but much better. It is sweeter, and more flavorful than a grapefruit if you get a good one. Here where I live, in Davao City on the island of Mindanao, which is in the Philippines, Pomelo is one of our favorite local fruits. The city is famous for two different fruits, the Pomelo and the Durian. Well, today the lunch I had is based mostly on … [Read more...]

Visit from a friend

Using-the-ATM-machine

About two weeks ago I saw a friend that I had not seen for about 2 years. He lives in San Diego, California, but he comes to the Philippines on a somewhat regular basis. Since I live in the Philippines, not far from the place where he usually goes, we usually try to see each other at least once if he is visiting. Like I said, it had been about 2 years since we had seen each other, and when I saw him the first thing that I thought was that he has lost significant weight since we last saw each other. We talked about it, and he told me that he had undergone gastric bypass surgery. Now, I had strongly considered last November. I had done … [Read more...]

Mangosteen Monday

Living-in-the-Tropics

Woke up to a beautiful Monday Morning. Clear skies, sunshine, everything going well! I can't complain at all about this Monday! I started off the day with breakfast eaten in front of my computer while working. I had two banana muffins this morning, made with Splenda instead of sugar. They were delicious. One thing about living in the Philippines... there is really excellent fruit here. I particularly enjoy Papaya, which is great. It is amazing at the difference in the taste of fruits here compared to the US. When I lived in the States I ate Papaya from time to time. What I remember was putting either sugar or some form of sweetener … [Read more...]

Feeling good today

40s

Shortly after taking my last blood glucose, around 3pm I had a small snack, 2 oz. of smoked salmon. After that I worked for a bit and then took a shorter walk, 1 mile about 30 minutes or so. Just took a post exercise reading and my blood glucose is 85 right now. This is the time when I need to watch myself for signs that my blood sugar is going too low. It still has some room to go down, but if it goes down too much that is not good. I am pretty sure I won't have that problem though, because my exercise is finished for the day and we will have dinner within the hour. One thing that I have learned in the past couple of months is a good … [Read more...]

As I said in my last post, only about an hour ago, my blood sugar was a bit high after breakfast. From a nice reading of 108 when I woke up this morning, my reading 2 hours after breakfast was a whopping 172. According to a lot of websites I read, they say that 2 hours after a meal your glucose should be under 160. Other websites I have seen say 180. For me, I like it to be under 140 after a meal. If I can keep it under 140 (which I usually can), I feel good about that. I don't feel bad if it is 172, but it signals me that I need to do something... eat better next time, get some exercise, etc. What I do know is that lower is better (of … [Read more...]

It's kind of cloudy here today. Actually that is sort of nice for a change. Our normal weather here is sunny and hot. Normal high temperatures for the day are between 90 and 100 degrees F, sometimes over 100. If it rains, that usually happens at night. And humid? Oh boy... So, we don't see heavy cloud cover very often, but with the cloud cover we have today, that has kept the temperature down nicely, probably in the low 80's, I'd say. It's nearly 4pm now, in 30 minutes or so I will take a walk for exercise. I took my wife, son and niece out for lunch today. We ate at a local Vietnamese restaurant, and the food was excellent. I ate … [Read more...]
