This and that… and the other!

Feyma with some Christmas Gifts we will give out

Well, it's been a busy few weeks in the Martin household in Davao.  I've been busy with a lot of different things, it seems.  I suppose that the holidays are like that.  So, I thought I'd just write a "general" article that is really not about anything in particular.  Just an update of what has been going on, and maybe an update of some of my more recent articles here on MindanaoBob, my personal website. One of the big pieces of news here, in my opinion, is that I have a new cat!  I should say that "we" (as a family) have a new cat, but I consider this one to be "my cat" and she stays in my office and in our bedroom, so she hangs out … [Read more...]

Philippine Safety – Viewed from a different angle

postal

You hear a lot from potential tourists, expats and other foreigners about safety when it comes to the Philippines.  People who are coming here for a visit, or considering the Philippines as a retirement destination voice the “safety issue” often.  They fear being murdered.  They fear kidnapping.  They fear getting mugged.  They fear being ripped off financially by “slick” Filipinos who are out to get their money.  What else do they fear?  Well, from the e-mails and comments I hear from foreigners, it seems that many foreigners fear anything that moves here, even the shadows.  As you can imagine, given the fact … [Read more...]

Pasalubong

What is “pasalubong?”  It is a travel gift.  In other words, if you travel from a far away place, you are kind of expected to bring your close friends and family a gift of some kind.  I am talking about Filipino friends and family, of course. For example, if you come from the USA to visit family in the Philippines (or close friends) you are kind of expected to bring something that is “from the USA” to share with your loved ones when you arrive.  Same thing if you were to come from Europe, Australia or wherever.  In fact, if you live in the Philippines and let’s say you needed to travel to Manila or Cebu to … [Read more...]

Chance meeting turns to friendship

Jonalyn2-150x150

Yesterday was an interesting day for me.  Mostly it was a normal day, but a couple of things happened which were highlights of my day. Firstly, in the morning, I met with Tom Martin.  Tom is not a relative, we just share the Martin name!  I met Tom in person for the first time on [...] … [Read more...]

How far are you willing to go?

saka-150x150

If you truly love somebody, how far are you willing to go in terms of making a sacrifice to improve their life?  In recent weeks, I find myself facing that question. Over the past few years, I have become very close with one of my nieces.  Her name is Nicole, and she is 6 years old, or as she would say “mag 7″ (translated… will be 7) in January.  Nicole is really a cute and sweet girl, and I love her very much.  I am a sucker for kids anyway, but there is something special about Nicole.  When she was much younger, I was not that close to her, as I already lived in Davao when she was born, and we just didn’t know … [Read more...]

A new writer on LiP

AJ_LiP-150x150

Today, it is my pleasure to welcome a new writer to the Live in the Philippines Web Magazine.  We get new writers here on a fairly regular basis, and although I enjoy all of our new writers, today it is a special honor for me to introduce this particular new writer!  You see, our new writer that is joining us here on LiP today is Aaron, or AJ as I call him.  It’s AJ Martin, my son! Aaron is 14 years old.  He is a second year High School student at Ateneo de Davao University here in Davao City. Aaron was just 3 years old when we moved to the Philippines, but he still has memories of living in the United States, though. Aaron Martin, … [Read more...]
