Over the years, Feyma and I have eaten at many restaurants in Davao. I don’t know, it is at least in the dozens of different local restaurants, maybe it even reaches 100 different restaurants in the city. In the years that we have lived here, though, one restaurant has stood out as one of our very favorites. That restaurant is Hanoi, obviously a Vietnamese restaurant.
Until going to Hanoi, I had never really tried Vietnamese food before. I was a little leery of it, to be honest. I had always been under the impression that Vietnamese food was mostly vegetables, herbs and such. Not that I am against that, but I am a real meat lover, and my impression of Vietnamese was that not so much meat was involved in their food.
One day, maybe 6 or 7 years ago, I had a meeting with a lady who’s family owned a restaurant called Hanoi, which was located in downtown Davao, adjacent to the Casa Leticia Hotel on J. Camus Street in Davao City. The hotel, by the way, is owned by the same family. Anyway, the lady proposed that we meet at Hanoi Restaurant, so I met her there. She went on to order an array of dishes for us to sample. Since one of the owners was doing the ordering, she must have known exactly what would tease my taste buds, because I was instantly hooked! The next day I took Feyma there for her to try the Vietnamese food, and she loved it too.
Our most recent visit to Hanoi
These days, Hanoi has relocated and no longer has the location on J. Camus, they are now located at Abreeza Mall on JP Laurel Street in Bajada, Davao City. It’s a newer, more modern place, and quite a nice ambiance. The food is still great too.
After being absent from Hanoi for a while, my wife and I decided to go back and get re-acquainted with Hanoi’s wonderful food. We ordered some of our all time favorite Hanoi dishes, Pork in Rice Paper, Pomelo Salad, Fried Rice, Beef Tenderloin in Tomato Sauce, and we saw a new item on the menu that intrigued us, a Vietnamese style short rib dish, so we ordered that too. Yes, that’s a lot of food for 2 people! We always over-order at Hanoi, because there are just so many great dishes to choose from. It makes it hard to narrow it down to enough for only two! So, we always end up bringing food home with us, which is not a bad thing! Our kids always like it when we bring home extra food from Hanoi, I guarantee that!
Over the years, I don’t recall ever eating anything at Hanoi that was not excellent. Their food is top notch, the service is generally excellent, and it’s always a nice enjoyable meal for Feyma and I.
Will I be back at Hanoi? You bet I will! Maybe I’ll see you there, because I highly recommend this place. Give it a try!
